James C. Shumate, Jr., 83 of Sophia, died Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at his home following a sudden illness.
Born April 27, 1916 in Troutdale, VA., he was the son of the late James C. Sr., and Octavia Wood Shumate.
Mr. Shumate was a retired coal miner. He was a past recorder for the Town of Sophia, a former member of the Sophia Lions Club and a member of the West Virginia National Guard.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, George C., Basil and Harry Shumate.
Survirors include his wife, Jane Mahoney Shumate; four sons, Melvin J. Shumate and his wife, Freeda, of Fairdale, James M. Shumate and his wife, Greta, of Akron, Summit Co., Ohio, Joel L. Shumate and his wife, Thelma of Shady Spring and Barry M. Shumate and his wife, Terry of Soak Creek; a daughter, Shelia Shumate of Sedona, Arizonia; 20 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Sophia, with the Rev. Jim Mundy officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Sen. Robert C. Byrd., Okey Mills, Eugene W. Hooper, Ernest Nichols and Red Henderson will serve as honorary pallbearers.
