Musician. Born David Fedorovich Oistrakh in Odessa, Russia, he is considered the premiere concert violinist of the mid-twentieth century Soviet Union. Educated at the Odessa Conservatory, he made his premiere in Moscow in 1929 and joined the Moscow Conservatory, eventually rising to the rank of full professor. Gaining success on the competition circuit in the 1930s, the Soviet Government sent him to Brussels to compete in the International Ysaÿe Competition in 1937, where he took home first prize. During the 1940s, Oistrakh was active performing in the Soviet Union and gaining much notice on the international concert scene. From the 1950s to early 1970s, he recorded, toured the U.S. six times, and had a successful career as an orchestral conductor. He died in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
