Rev. John Thomas Canfield was the son of John C. and Esther L. (Hotchkiss) Canfield. Sarah R. (Cooke) Canfield was his 1st wife. They were married July 4, 1858. Sarah died March 7, 1891. Mary (Weller) Canfield was his 2nd wife. They were married March 15, 1892. Mary died November 17, 1910. Rev. Canfield was a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church: East Genesee Conference 1863 F 1865 Central New York Conference by change of boundaries 1872 East Genesee Conference at reorganziation and to Genesee (Western New York/now Upper New York) Conference by consolidation 1876.

CANFIELD.-- Rev. J. T. Canfield, presiding elder of the Corning District of the Genesee Conference of the Methodist Episcopal church from 1885 to 1890, died of convulsions of the heart at his home in Dundee on July 21. Mr. Canfield was 72 years of age. When two years old he came with his parents to Bradford, Steuben county, and at that place acquired his common school education. Deciding to enter the ministry he took a theological course in an institution in Michigan. In 1863 he supplied the M. E. church in Savona and South Bradford.In the year 1863 Mr. Canfield was at Kanona, at which place he remained for two years. He also held charges at the following places : In 1865, at Potter, Yates county : 1866-68, at Tyrone, Schuyler county : 1869-71 at Millport : 1872, at Mansfield, Pa : 1873-74, at Horseheads : 1875-77, at Tyrone : 1878-80, at Addison. Steuben county : 1881-83, at Painted Post, Steuben county. After serving five years as presiding elder of the Corning district, in 1891 he was appointed pastor of the Dansville Methodist church, and in 1892 to the Perry, Wyoming county, church, where he remained until 1895, this being his last regular charge. In 1895 and 1896 he was financial agent for the Silver Lake Assembly, after which he moved to Dundee. In 1897 to 1900 he acted as conference evangelist. In 1892 he was sent to Omaha, Neb., as conference delegate.Mr. Canfield married Miss Sarah Crook, of Michigan, who died in 1891. March 15, 1892, he married Miss Mary Weller, of Dundee, who survives him. His only other relatives are two nieces, Mrs. John Bancroft, of Sonora, and Mrs Mary Connolly, who resided with him, and three nephews, William Canfield, of Syracuse, Rev. Frank Van Kuren, of Wellsville, N. Y., and Charles Bancroft.
