COUNTY MAN BURNED TO DEATH WHEN FIRE DESTROYS HOUSE

BIG HUNGRY RESIDENT IS THE VICTIM

A 64 year old resident of the Big Hungry Community was fatally burned beyond recognition around 4:28 a.m. today as fire demolished his small four room house.
The body of Grady Shipman was recognized by members of the Blue Ridge Volunteer Fire Department who arrived at the scene shortly after 4:30 a.m. Dr James H Wilson, county coroner, stated that death had ocuured due to severe burns and asphyxiation. He described the body as being badly charred and that death would have been quick and certain even if the man had not inhaled smoke. Shipman's body was located just off the front porch of the burned building where it was covered by a pile of roofing tin which had fallen when the house frame was burned down.
The coroner added that a set of car keys, medicine bottle and a wallet were found near the body, which afforded information necessary to identfication. As the cause of death appeared obvious, no autopsy as mad and no inquest planned.
According to Lenel Corn, fire chief, the department at Blue Ridge received the call at around 4:25 a.m. from a General Electric employee who was passing the Shipman home on the Big Hungry Road, returning home from work. Three units and 20 men were rushed to the scene, but could only wet down the remains of the house of which nothing was left to salvage. The house owned by F.S. Hill of Big Hungry was located a mile east of the Upward-Dana Road.
Chief Corn stated that cause of the blaze has not yet been determined. Shipman apparently was alone in the house as his wife left earlier to visit relatives, taking the children with her.
It appeared that Shipman was asleep at the time the fire started and had tried to get out of the house but his clothes evidently caught fire. Somehow he made it to the edge of the porch before he collapsed and afterward a sheet of tin from the roof fell down covering him. It also appeared that Shipman had taken time to recover his valuables before leaving the burning house.
Corn said that the man reporting the fire stated that the foof had fallen in when he first noticed the blaze.
Efforts of the fire department were hampered somewhat by a small bridge over a stream that had to be crossed before approaching the Shipman place. Corn explained that some water had to be let out of the water tank truck to lighten it so it would cross the weakened bridge. Nothing could be done at that time to save the building, however.
Survivors are the wif, Mrs Bessie Louise Theo Ranines Shipman, a daugher, Mrs Ruth Gilbert of Inman S.C.; three brothers; three sisters; two step-daughters, Mrs Janie Jones of Hendersonville and Miss Betty Raines of the home; five stepsons, Bobby Raines of Mills River, Bickie Raines of Wisconsin, Frankie Raines of Route 1, Flat Rock, and Steve and Belvin Raines, both of the home.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Jackson Funeral Home.
