Born in South Dakota to Myres and Mary Ellen Day Carey but came to Saskatchewan, Canada with his family at the age of 11. He served briefly in the Canadian army near the end of WW1, attended Brandon College, married Beatrice Webster, was the father of 2 children and lived on the family farm south of Foam Lake, Saskatchewan throughout most of his adult life.
