What was supposed to be a special father-son weekend turned tragic when a vehicle crash killed 8-year-old Jacob Ash and seriously injured his father, Joshua Curtis, 28.

Curtis, of Concord, and his son were driving in Hillsdale County's Cambria Township when their vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree Friday night.

"It's a horrible, horrible situation," said Dan Kidder, general manager of Rose City Motors, where Curtis works as the dealership's service manager.

Jacob died at the crash site on Steamburg Road near Reynolds Road, according to a press release from the Michigan State Police.

Curtis was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was listed in critical condition late Monday.

Family members and friends are devastated.

Jacob was born in Hillsdale but moved to Cecil, Ohio, with his mother, Heather Skala, about three or four years ago. He was in the second grade at Paulding Elementary School.

Jacob was supposed to spend the weekend with his father.

Jacob enjoyed riding his bike, racing, video games and cartoons.

"He was a happy little boy," said Joy L. Dilyard of Cecil, Jacob's grandmother. "It's hard to explain how Jacob is. He's just happy about things."

Skala said she has been receiving a lot of support from family and friends.

"I'm just taking it one day at a time," Skala said.

Skala said she and her family continue to pray for Curtis.

Kidder said he and the staff at Rose City Motors have been getting regular updates on Curtis, and they are all pulling for him.

Arrangements for Jacob are being handled by Brown-VanHemert Funeral Home in Addison. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today. The funeral is at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
