American Civil War Veteran Remembered at Swanpool Cemetery

A unique event commemorating the life of an American Civil War veteran buried at Swanpool Cemetery took place over this weekend. The memorial service for Dave, Col. Carey was arranged by the general staff of Blues and Gray's and featured a series of events to mark the occasion. From 11 a.m. Saturday members of the public were able to explore a traditional Civil War campsite set-up at Pendennis Castle and see how the soldiers lived during the war. The turnout was strong and they received a good response from the public. On Sunday, the mayor of Falmouth, the mayor of Helston and the deputy mayor of Truro helped form a civic party including local councillors to join in with the commemoration. They met for drinks in the Municipal building before beginning their parade through Falmouth town to Swanpool Cemetery where there was an hour's memorial service, which was attended by around 35 members of the public. The service was conducted by Reverend Barrington Bennetts at the graveside of Col. Carey.
