Antonie Catharine Berg was born on the 10th of February 1868 in the Prussian village of Suenninghausen near Oelde. Her father, Heinrich Berg, was the teacher at the local school and also a sexton at the St. Vitus Kirche where Antonia and her twelve siblings were christened. Antonia's mother, Gertrud Wueller (Mueller)or Cubick of Ahlen and Henrich Berg were married in 1858 in the St. Vitus Kirche.

Antonia married Franz X. Strunk in about 1895 and lived in Solingen. Their daughter, Elisabeth Gertrud, was born on 4 February 1896 in Soest. According to family stories, Antonia had a dress shop in Solingen/Elberfeld. One of her sisters, Anna Sophia Henrica Berg, later married Adolf Wiertz of Elberfeld and emigrated to the United States.

On August 7, 1897 "Franz, Tony and Gertrud Strunk" departed from Antwerp on the "SS Southwark" bound for New York. They arrived on August 17, 1897 and lived for a time in Cinncinati. By 1904,"Antonia and Frank" Strunk (as they were known in the U.S.) lived in Chicago with their five children.

Between 1925 and 1927, Antonia Strunk commissioned two hotels to be built in Chicago by Ralph C, Harris, The Devonshire (19 East Ohio)(now the Tokyo Hotel) and the Berkshire Hotel (15 E. Ohio), later completely rebuilt as the Hotel Comfort Inn.
