Here rest the Remains
of
FRANCIS BAYLIES
He was born October 16, 1783
and
Died October 28, 1852.
In all the relations of private and social life.
He manifested the feelings
Of a generous and affectionate heart,
And was endeared to a wide circle of friends,
By his kind and cheerful disposition,
And frank and cordid manners.
His political character
Was strongly marked by an independent spirit:
He thought for himself, and
Acted from his own sense of duty:
Though tolerant and candid,
He was at the same time firm and fearless:
Acknowledg'ing no man for master,
And worshipping no idol:
And ever ready to oppose himself
To the tide of popular opinion,
When taking, as he thought, a wrong direction.
He possessed a mind of a high order:
And by extensive reading and unwearied application,
Aided by a strong and retentive memory,
Had acquired a large fund of knowledge,
Especially in relation to the History
Of his own Country:
And as the eloquent historian of
PLYMOUTH COLONY
His name will ever be held in grateful remembrance
BY THE DESCENDANTS OF THE PILGRIMS.
==========
THIS MONUMENT,
A tribute of affection to his memory,
Is erected by
WILLIAM BAYLIES,
His only surviving brother.
