Olympic Athlete and Actor. He was a two-time bronze medal winner in the decathlon at the 1948 and 1952 Olympic games. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, he served in the United States Army in the 10th Mountain Division during World War II and received a Purple Heart. After his Olympic career, he appeared in numerous movies during the 1950s and 1960s, including the films, "Pillars of the Sky" (1956), "The Tattered Dress" (1957), "South Pacific" (1958), "Party Girl" (1958), and "Twice-Told Tales" (1963). He also enjoyed a career as an accomplished photographer.
