When Bernard arrived in Vietnam 5 August 1969, he was assigned to C Company, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry, 196th Infantry Brigade, Americal, USARV. C Company was on a patrol when they were engaged by hostile forces, 5 kilometers east southeast of Hiep Duc Village, Quang Tin Province. Bernard died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the body from a hostile explosive device.
