Maurits was one of 8 children born to Levi & Betje (nee Cats) Monasch. He was the only one of the children to survive the Holocaust. He married Neeltje in 1911 and they moved to Canada at that time. The rest of the family stayed behind in various parts of the province of Zuid Holland and were all murdered in either Auschwitz or Sobibor. Their parents died before the war.
