Neeltje was the daughter of Adrianus & Lena (nee Breeman) de Gans. She married Maurits on 15 March 1911. The couple moved to Canada after the wedding and became Canadian citizens. Their first child died at 2 weeks old. Five years later they had Louis, and raised him in Canada.
