Composer, Pianist. A native of Montreal, Contant made his performing debut at the age of thirteen. Due to stage fright he soon gave up performing in favor of composing and teaching. Considered the first noted Canadian composer to have been trained in Canada, he is best remembered for such works as "Trio" for the violin, "Le Canada," "Les Deux Âmes," and "Caïn", the latter Canada's first oratorio.
