Alfred was born in Jamaica, West Indies and had left Jamaica about 5 years ago for New York. He was living in Jamaica, New York, with his wife when he enlisted in the US Army.
Arriving in Vietnam 10 March 1968, Alfred was assigned to A Company, 7th Support Battalion, 199th Infantry Brigade, USARV. For the duration of his tour Alfred was assigned to Camp Frenzell-Jones and 7 kilometers east of Bien Hoa City. Alfred was asleep in their living barracks, when hostile forces fired several rockets at the base. Alfred died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the body from the hostile rocket attack launched against the base.
SSgt Clayton served his country for 4 years.
Survived by his wife, Fay B Clayton of 187-30 119th Road, Jamaica, New York, and his mother; Doris M Campbell of 13 Bray Street, Kingston 16, Jamaica, West Indies.
