John Alexander Moores was the firstborn of William Jonathan Moores ' 6 sons by his 1st wife Martha "Patsy"Hamilton. Both John and 3rd son James were given the middle name Alexander a nod to Williams oldest sister Elizabeth who married Andrew Alexander. By the time the Civil War began in 1862 John had married his stepsister Jemima Scrivner and had 3 children on their way to eleven. Three of his brothers James, Archibald and Coleman served in the Union Army.

John Alexander Moores is the John Alexander Moores mentioned on page 228 of Annie Julia Mims book "A Record of the Descendants of Isaac Ross and Jean Brown". Merrill Moores of Indiana was in Ky seeking info on his gr grandfathers (Lt Henry Moores) Ky land grant. He was not aware of John Alexander Moores relationship to him. He spoke to him about 1912 in Union City,Madison,Ky.

Johns brother Josiah married their other stepsister Keturah. Each couple had eleven children. John and Jemima raised their family in Madison County Ky. while Josiah and Keturah raised their family just to the North in Fayette County Ky. Of the ten sons in the Moores-Scrivner family six served in the Union Army. Two did not return-one dying in Tuscumbia,Alabama and one in Wilmington, N.C. I think the Family was well represented in the struggle to preserve our great nation.
