"Mary was a lady of beauty and brilliant mind, and at an early age attracted attention for her literary attainments."

Mary was a daughter of General William and Sarah Ann Godbold Evans. When she was 18, she met and fell in love with 22 year old Augustus Julian Requier, an attorney from Charleston. Mary's father opposed the courtship but she married Augustus on March 28, 1850 at the home of her aunt.

After the wedding, they lived in a small home on East Broad Street but Augustus was unable to make a success in Marion due to the influence of his father-in-law. Not long after the marriage they moved to Alabama, but not before General Evans had forgiven Mary.

The couple were personally happy and professionally successful in Mobile. Every summer they would travel back to Marion for a visit with Mary's family.

At the age of thirty, Mary died from an infection that occurred after having a tooth extracted. Augustus would eventually move to New York where he continued to practice law and published several books of poetry.

Her earthly remains alone are here: she HERSELF has risen, by the mercy of the Lord, whose commandments she lovingly kept, to the glory of the most perfect life Everlasting.

Oh, Mary, Mary, Mary dear
If in my bosom shine,
One thought, one dream, one single wish,
That single wish is thine:
And if to see and feel and hear
But thee in heart and brain.
Be love I love thee, Mary dear,
And cannot love again.
