Roman Catholic Cardinal. Casalecchio di Reno born Egano Righi-Lambertini received his education at the Pontifical Regional Seminary of Bologna and later in Rome at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Academy of Ecclesiastical Nobles, being ordained priest on May 25, 1929. Joining the Vatican Secretariat of State, he was named auditor in the apostolic nunciature in Italy, an office he held until 1949, when he was appointed auditor and counselor in the apostolic nunciature of France. Appointed Domestic Prelate of His Holiness on December 10, 1954, he served as chargé d'affaires in the nunciatures of Costa Rica and Venezuela and later in the apostolic delegation of Great Britain from 1954 until 1957, when on December 28 he was named apostolic delegate in Korea. Receiving his episcopal consecration with the titular archbishopric see of Doclea on October 28, 1960 following his appointment as apostolic nuncio in Lebanon at the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica from Pope John XXIII, on December 9, 1963 he was appointed apostolic nuncio in Chile followed by Italy on July 8, 1967 and France on April 23, 1969, which country decorated him as grand officer of the Légion d'honneur. In the consistory of June 30, 1979, Pope John Paul II, created him cardinal deacon with the deaconry of San Giovanni Bosco in via Tuscolana. Opting for the order of cardinal priests and the title of Santa Maria in Via on November 26, 1990, the Cardinal died in Rome on October 4, 2000 and is found interred in the family chapel in the cemetery of his native Casalecchio di Reno.
