Roman Catholic Cardinal. Naples born Gaetano de Ruggiero received his education under the Jesuits and the Barnabites and successively at the university of his native city. Director of the the journal 'Liberta Cattolica' he moved to Rome in 1847, where attached to the Roman Curia, he served among others as regent of the Apostolic Chancery between 1877 and 1889 and bursar and secretary of the Sacred Congregation of the Reverend Fabric of St. Peter's from April 18, 1885 until 1889. At the age of 73, he was created cardinal deacon by Pope Leo XIII in the consistory of May 24, 1889, with the deaconry of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Named executor of the papal bull of Benedict XIV concerning the shrine of Assisi on August 6, 1889, he served as prefect of the Economy of the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda Fide and general president of the Chamber of Despoilments, an office he received on October 3, 1889. Furthermore, he was named secretary of Apostolic Briefs on June 25, 1894, and later grand chancellor of the Pontifical Equestrian Orders. Passing away in Rome following a lengthy illness, his body was exposed in the church of San Andrea della Valle and later buried inside the chapel of the Vatican Chapter at the local Campo Verano Cemetery.
