Thelma M. Thacker, 92, died at 3:21 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at the Great River Medical Center Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. Thelma was born on Nov. 16, 1915 in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of John Edward and Lillian Hazel Dowell Rickles. She was raised and educated in the Oquawka area where she has spent most of her life. Thelma married Clarence Thacker on Jan. 26, 1933, in Warren County, he preceded her in death September 1970.
Thelma has been a homemaker all her life and first was employed at the Burlington Instrument Company in Burlington, Iowa. She later worked as a clerk at Neisners Department Store also in Burlington. Thelma and her husband Clarence then were the first couple to operate and manage the Schlotzhauer Home in Oquawka, which they did for a number of years until retiring. Since then, Thelma has done some private domestic work locally and enjoyed Bingo, Dancing, and watching her birds especially Cardinals. She was a member of the Oquawka Eagle Aerie Auxiliary #3629. She most enjoyed visiting with family and friends.
Thelma is survived her daughter Sheron (Ralph) Kemp, Gulfport, daughter-in-law Kay Thacker, Burlington, Iowa 12 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 12 great great-grandchildren. Her step-brother also survives, Harlene (Betty) Rickles, Cheyanne, Wyo. and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in her death by her parents, husband, one son Clyde, and two sisters.
A Graveside Service is planned on Monday May 12, 2008 at the Oquawka Cemetery. Her family will receive friends at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka, on Monday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. prior to the service.
