Richard was recently discharged from the U.S. Air Force in the spring of 1967. He began working as a commercial pilot. He was flying Otis Redding and his band from Cleveland, OH to Madison, Wisconsin to perform a show at a club called the Factory. The plane crashed into Lake Monona, appoximately 4 miles from the airport, killing everyone on board except trumpet player Ben Cauley. The exact cause of the crash was never determined.

The aircraft was on approach to Traux Field, when the plane crashed in Lake Monona. Killed in the crash were Richard, Otis Redding and four members of Redding's Band: The Bar Kays(Phalon Jones, Jimmy King, Ronnie Caldwell, Carl Cunningham) as well Redding's Valet Matthew Kelly. Redding and the Bar Kays were to do a show at a club called The Factory that evening. To this day exact cause of the crash remains unknown
