Oklahoma Governor. Elected mayor of Oklahoma City in 1918, he served from 1919 to 1923. In 1922, he was elected Governor of Oklahoma as a Democrat and was inaugurated on January 8, 1923. He was frequently at odds with the state legislature and used extraordinary powers to combat Ku Klux Klan violence. Tulsa county was placed under martial law and the writ of habeas corpus was suspended. When a grand jury was convened to investigate his actions, he placed the entire state under martial law and used the National Guard to stop the state legislature from meeting. On October 23, 1923, impeachment proceedings were brought against him, and he was suspended from office. On November 19, he was convicted and removed from office. Attempts to revive his political career floundered in the late 1920's and 1930's.
