Robert Lindsay Morehead was the first son of James Turner Morehead (1799-1875) and his wife Mary Teas Lindsay (1813-1847). He was doubtless named for his maternal grandfather, Col. Robert Lindsay (1776-1818) and great grandfather Judge Robert Lindsay (c.1735-1801). He was Lieutenant Colonel in the 45th NC Regiment, Confederate States Army. He died due to the after effects of a vaccination he received during the war.
