Youngest of six children born to Colonel James Turner Morehead (1799-1975) and his wife Mary Teas Lindsay (1813-1847), Mary Harper "Mamie" Lindsay attended Edgeworth Female Seminary, which was founded by her uncle, Gov. John Motley Morehead. There is a fascinating account of her presenting a flag to the Guilford Grays militia regiment in 1860, when she was elected May Queen, in the book "Silk Flags and Cold Steel: The Civil War in the North Carolina Piedmont," by William S. Trotter. Mamie never married, and is buried near her parents.
