Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Vivaro Romano, Angelo Di Pietro entered seminary in Tivoli, later furthering his studies at the La Sapienza University of Rome from where he earned a doctorate in utroque iure in both canon and civil laws. Ordained priest in December 1851, he served as secretary and pro-vicar general to the bishop of Tivoli and later as vicar general of the Diocese of Ostia and Velletri. Elected bishop of the titular see of Nisa di Licia and appointed suffragan of Velletri, he received his episcopal consecration July 1, 1866 in Rome from Cardinal Gustav Adolph von Hohenlohe. Promoted to the titular see of Nazianzo on December 28, 1877, he was appointed apostolic delegate and named extraordinary legate in Paraguay, Uruguay and in the Argentine Confederation on January 18, 1878. Successively he was appointed apostolic nuncio in the Brazilian Empire on September 30, 1879, apostolic nuncio in Bavaria on March 21, 1882, and later apostolic nuncio in Spain on May 23, 1887. Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of January 16, 1893 with the title of Ss. Bonifacio ed Alessio and named him prefect of the Sacred Congregation of the Council on June 20 of the same year. Appointed member of the Council of Cardinals for the election of the Italian Bishops on August 8, 1894, he was elected Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals on March 18, 1895, an office he held until the following year. The Cardinal was furthermore named prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Bishops and Regulars on July 20, 1902, pro-datary of His Holiness on November 27, 1902, and datary on June 29, 1908, a position he occupied until his death. Opting for the title of San Lorenzo in Lucina on June 22, 1903, the Cardinal died in Rome and was buried in the local Campo Verano Cemetery.
