Crossville Chronicle April 27, 1933

Sheriff G B Winningham of Pickett county, who was serving his 5th term as
sheriff, was fatally shot and his son, Floyd Winningham, a deputy, was
instantly killed Friday night when they attempted to arrest men charged with
an assault on an aged citizen a few miles from Byrdstown.
The sheriff and his son located the men in a boxcar and when they ordered
them to surrender, shots were fired that killed the son instantly and so
seriously injured the sheriff that he died in St Thomas hospital, Nashville
Saturday night at 11:15.
Deputy Sheriff Bramlett Garrett arrested Late Perry, Walter Crabtree and
Eugene Boyatt and took them to Cookeville for safekeeping. It is charged
that the fatal shots were fired by Jerome Boyatt, who had not been arrested
up to Monday.
Sheriff Winningham is a brother-in-law to James Smith, having married Mr
Smith's sister.

John's first wife was Amy Babb. His 2nd was Mary E. Grider.Floyd Winningham was a Deputy Sheriff in Pickett County, Tennessee. He also had served in World War I. He was killed in the line of duty. His father was the Sheriff of Pickett County, Tennessee, him and his father both were responding to a Lumber Camp to investigate reports of a murder. When they arrived with another Deputy, they were told the murder never happened. Though a drunk male was causing a disturbance in a Railroad Boxcar, they told the suspect to come out. The suspect opened fired with a .45 caliber handgun, striking Deputy Floyd Winningham in the head twice, killing him. In an exchange of gunfire, his father, Sheriff George Winningham, was shot in the stomach. While being transferred to another Hospital, in Nashville, the next day, he too died from his wounds, enroute. After the shooting, the suspect fled into the woods, where he remained for several weeks. The suspect evcentually surrendered himself to a Scott County Deputy, in fear he'd be killed by posse members. Several days after being arrested, a mob of citizens and lawmen broke into the jail, took out the suspect and another prisoner, and murdered them in Scott County. Deputy Winningham was survived by his wife, son, daughter, mother, and brother. His brother, Willie Winningham, was the Sheriff of Clinton County, Kentucky, he was shot and killed 3 months later, on July 29th, 1933, why attempting to serve a warrant on a drunk male.
