Dr. Richard Brown of Phoenix died Sunday, May 11, 2008, at his home. He was 80.

Born August 2, 1927, to Raymond and Anna Newell Brown at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Dr. Brown grew up in Columbus, graduating from Columbus High School in 1945.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946 and graduated from DePauw University in 1950.

He earned a doctorate in medicine from Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia in 1955 and trained in pediatrics at Children's Hospital in Cincinnati and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

He also served as a professor of medicine at University of Southern California.

He established a practice in Tucson, Arizona, in 1958, becoming the first pediatric cardiologist in the state. As part of his practice, he devoted one day a week to the care of neglected and abused children in need of free medical treatment.

He was a magician who started each office day with an array of tricks to ease the minds of his young patients.

He also was an accomplished pianist and loved to travel extensively with his family.

Dr. Brown was the last surviving member of the fourth generation of the family that has owned and published The Republic since 1872.

He, his brother, Robert, and sister, Elizabeth Brown Marshall, were co-owners of Home News Enterprises (parent company of the Brown County Democrat) for more than three decades. They precede him in death.

Dr. Brown is survived by his wife, Sherry; children, Laura Bell (John), Timothy Brown (Victoria), David Brown (Joanne), Pamela Riley and Richard Brown (Devorah); 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, at Hathaway-Myers Chapel in Columbus. Calling will be from 2 to 4 p.m. preceding the service. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.

Dr. Richard Brown, the last surviving member of the fourth generation of the family that has owned and published The Republic since 1872, died Sunday at his home in Phoenix.
