Roman Catholic Cardinal. Santa Fiora born Valerio Valeri entered the Roman Pio Seminary, later furthering his studies at the Pontifical Roman Athenaeum Sant'Apollinare, being ordained priest on December 21, 1907. Faculty member of the Pontifical Regional Seminary of Fano and later of the named Pontifical Roman Athenueum Sant'Apollinare, he served as military chaplain in the Great War and later as staff member of the Secretariat of State. Between 1921 and 1927, Valeri served as auditor of the apostolic nunciature in France, being named Privy Chamberlain of His Holiness on July 6, 1921, reappointed on May 5, 1922 and named Domestic Prelate of His Holiness on July 22, 1923. Elected archbishop of the titular see of Efeso on October 18, 1927 and appointed apostolic delegate in Egypt and Arabia, he received his episcopal consecration on Friday, October 28, 1927 in Rome from Cardinal Donato Sbarretti, prefect of the Sacred Congregation of the Council. Named apostolic nuncio in Romania on July 1, 1933 and later in France on July 11, 1936, he was awarded the grand cross of the Légion d'Honneur in 1944 when he left France. Assigned to the section of Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs in the Secretariat of State until 1948, he was appointed president of the Central Committee for the Holy Year on June 28 that year and assessor of the Sacred Congregation for the Oriental Church on the following September 1. Pope Pius XII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of January 12, 1953 with the title of San Silvestro in Capite and appointed him prefect of the Sacred Congregation for Religious five days later. The Cardinal died in his apartment at the Holy Office after being stricken with a serious throat infection on July 22, 1963 and was buried in the family chapel inside the cemetery of his native Santa Fiora.
