Roman Catholic Cardinal. Longtime confessor of Monsignor Giovanni Battista Enrico Maria Montini, future Blessed Pope Paul VI, Padre Giulio Bevilacqua CO., came from a family of merchants. Born at Isola d'Ischia, he underwent studies at the University of Louvain in Belgium prior to his entry in the Diocesan Seminary of Brescia. Joining eventually the Congregation of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri, through which he was ordained priest on June 13, 1908 in Brescia, he served as military chaplain during the Great War. Rendering ministry in Brescia from his ordination year up to his death, he served among others as staff member of the Secretariat of State for the protection against Fascist threats. Chaplain in the Italian Navy during the Second World War, a young Giovanni Battista Montini chose him as his spiritual director while still a student in Brescia. Once elected Pope, he had Bevilacqua elected archbishop of the titular see of Gaudiana on February 15, 1965. Receiving his episcopal consecration three days later at the basilica of Ss. Faustus e Jovita in Brescia from Msgr. Luigi Morstabilini, bishop of Brescia, a week later he was created cardinal deacon by the Pontiff in the consistory of February 22, with the deaconry of San Girolamo della Carità. By special papal permission, he continued to serve as pastor of the parish church of Sant'Antonio della Pace in Brescia until his unexpected death three months later. On the occasion of his episcopal consecration, Padre Giulio assured his parishioners that he would continue to wear his simple black cassock instead of the required regalia for a cardinal. His body lies interred inside his beloved parish church in Brescia.
