Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Sezzadio, Giuseppe Bruno received his education at the diocesan seminary of Acqui; the Pontifical Athenaeum San Tommaso d'Aquino in Rome, from where he earned his doctorate in philosophy; the Pontifical Athenaeum S. Apollinare, from where he obtained doctorates in theology and utroque iure in both canon and civil laws; the Studium of the Sacred Roman Rota, from where graduated as a curial lawyer; and at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he studied music. Ordained priest in April 1898 in Acqui, Bruno served as secretary of the Roman Theological Academy, director of the Acta Sanctae Sedis and of Acta Apostolicae Sedis, professor of law at the Pontifical Athenaeum S. Apollinare, and vice-auditor and later 'aiutante di studio' of the Sacred Congregation of the Council. Named privy chamberlain of His Holiness on March 4, 1922, and domestic prelate of His Holiness on January 3 of the following year, Msgr. Bruno was furthermore appointed secretary of the Pontifical Commission for the Authentic Interpretation of the Code of Canon Law on February 14, 1924, under-secretary and later secretary of the Sacred Congregation of the Council, secretary of the Pontifical Commission for the Academy of Theology, commissary of the Pontifical Institute of Christian Archaeology, and secretary of the Sacred Congregation of the Council. On July 25, 1932, he was named protonotary apostolic of His Holiness. Pope Pius XII created him cardinal deacon in the consistory of February 18, 1946 with the deaconry of Sant'Eustachio and named him prefect of the Sacred Congregation of the Council on November 16, 1949. He later appointed him prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of Apostolic Signature and of the Pontifical Commission for Authentic Interpretation of the Code of Canon Law on March 20, 1954. The Cardinal died in his residence at Lungotevere dei Vallati, no. 10, in Rome, after having received the last sacraments and the papal blessing. His funeral took place on Saturday, November 13, at the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. Msgr. Giuseppe dell'Omo, bishop of the diocese of Acqui, celebrated the mass in the presence of fourteen cardinals. At the end of the ceremony, Cardinal Clemente Micara, then vice-dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals, imparted the absolution in the name of the Pope. His body was buried inside the Campo Verano Cemetery of Rome.
