Roman Catholic Cardinal. Lapio born Giuseppe Caprio had an uncle by the same name, whom being a diocesan priest, served for many years as pro-secretary of the Economy of the Sacred Congregation of the Propaganda Fide. Entering the Archiepiscopal Seminary of Benevento, he furthered his studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University, from where he earned a licentiate in theology and a doctorate in canon law. Frequenting the Pontifical Academy of Ecclesiastical Nobles, he was ordained priest on December 17, 1938 at the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica in Rome. Assigned to the Secretariat of State of the Vatican City, he served as secretary of the apostolic nunciature in China until being expelled by the Communist regime after three months of house arrest in Nanchang. Appointed auditor of the apostolic nunciature in Belgium in 1951, he served as visitor and regent of the apostolic delegation in South Vietnam between 1954 and 1959. Named domestic prelate of His Holiness on November 21, 1955, he was appointed internuncio in China on May 20, 1959, receiving his episcopal consecration on the following December 14 with the titular archbishopric see of Apollonia inside the basilica of the Madonna delle Grazie of Benevento from Cardinal Gregoire-Pierre Agagianian, prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. Appointed pro-nuncio in India on August 22, 1967, he served as head of the Vatican delegation to the Second UNO Conference for Commerce and Development in New Delhi, secretary of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See, substitute of the Secretariat of State and pro-president of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See. Pope John Paul II created him cardinal deacon in the consistory of June 30, 1979 with the deaconry of Santa Maria Ausiliatrice in via Tuscolana and named him president of the Administration of Patrimony of Apostolic See two days later and later president of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See on January 30, 1981. Cardinal protodeacon as of June 22, 1987, he was furthermore appointed Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem on November 15, 1988. Resigning the presidency on January 22, 1990, he opted for the order of cardinal priests and the title of Santa Maria della Vittoria on November 26, 1990. Resigning the grand mastership in December 1995, Cardinal Caprio died on October 15, 2005, in the afternoon in Rome at the age of 90. Funeral mass, presided by Pope Benedict XVI, who also delivered the homily, took place on Tuesday, October 18, 2005, at 11 am., in the altar of the chair of Saint Peter's Patriarchal Vatican Basilica. Another funeral mass for the late Cardinal was held the next day in the parish church of Santa Catarina d'Alessandria of his native Lapio, where he had been baptized, presided by Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. It was in this church that the remains of the Cardinal were buried in accordance to his will at the end of the ceremony.
