Robert Ross McIntire, 83, of Parkersburg, died peacefully at his home Thursday morning, June 6, 2002. Born May 15, 1919, in Smithfield, West Virginia, the son of Eddis Earl and Bertha Ellen (Bleuer/Blair) McIntire, he was one of six children raised on the banks of Fish Creek and in the surrounding hills and woods. He is survived by sisters Earline Crumbaker of Baltimore, MD; Theodosia Levinson of Benson, NC; a brother, James Joseph McIntire of Zanesville, OH. Two brothers preceded him in death; John Fred McIntire of Croydon, PA and Billie Bert McIntire of Charlestown, RI.

A graduate of Smithfield High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1939. He was a proud crew member of the U.S.S. Corry, DD-463 serving aboard from the day after launch until the ship was sunk early on the morning of D-Day, June 6, 1944. Later in his life he took great pleasure in meeting with crewmates at annual Ship Reunions. He also served aboard six other vessels including the President's escort USS Cuyahoga, commanded shore patrols in the Philippines, and taught at the Naval War College in Newport, RI and Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Michigan. Honorably discharged as a Chief Torpedoman, he returned to Smithfield.

He married Ona Merle Morris, September 22, 1946 at her parents' home on Hoyt Ridge in Wetzel County. They made their home in Parkersburg, where they raised their three children. He worked as an auto mechanic, first for the Nash garage and later for Chittum Buick, where his brother Bill was a salesman. He joined the Maintenance Department at Kaiser Aluminum in Belpre, a week after it opening in 1957 and retired in 1988 after 31 years leaving many dear friends. He enjoyed squirrel hunting, fishing and working indoors and out. He spent many hours maintaining a lake and land he shared with his cousin, Carlyle Koon.

The depth of his dedication and affection was aptly demonstrated in his loving care for his wife through a long and difficult illness. Her death in January 2000 sadly left him without his life's partner.

In addition to his brother and sisters, he is survived by his three children, their spouses and his grand children: his daughter, Melissa Jane Brown and husband, Phill, reside in Davis with their daughter Maggie and son Ed. Melissa's daughter, Abbey Arnett, lives in Charlottesville, VA, her son, Sam, lives in South Charleston and son, Walter, lives Lexington, KY. His son, Steve and wife, Eydie, reside in Parkersburg, with their sons, Drew and Eric. His son, Bob, and daughter-in-law, Gail Wippelhauser, live in Hallowell, ME.

The family welcomes visitors at Leavitt's Funeral Home 403 7th Street in Parkersburg Saturday, June 8th from 2PM – 4PM and 6PM- 8PM. A funeral service will be held Sunday at the Leavitt Funeral Home beginning at 2:00PM with a visitation period from 1-2PM. Visitation and a funeral service will also be held Monday morning at 10:30AM at the New Martinsville Church of Christ. Evangelist Wirt Cook will officiate both services. Interment will follow at Northview Cemetery, New Martinsville.
