James, 84, was the youngest child of William Albert and Belle Pomeroy of Daingerfield, Texas. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17, and he was one of the last surviving World War II veterans who were stationed at Pearl Harbor during the infamous attack in 1941. He served aboard the Lexington, the Saratoga, and the Enterprise carriers and was the youngest first class petty officer to serve in the U.S. Navy during the war. In 1962, he moved from Carson City to Las Vegas, and married Betty Miller Bates in June of 1969. He worked for the Nevada State Highway Department for over 30 years, and then spent the next 10 years working as a technical specialist in materials used for highway construction. He was a parishioner at St. Christopher's Catholic Church, where he was active in the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his children, Beverly Pomeroy Ledet, Dr. James Larry Pomeroy, and Jackie Louise Pomeroy White; stepson, Gary Bates; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
