In 1840, the son of Mary Smith and Samuel Condit - Aaron Condit (1765-1852) who was a Princeton graduate (class of 1788) prepared an autobiography, which is an important handwritten document which provides evidence that his great grandfather James Smith (1665-1727) who was the father of Joseph Smith (1701-1768) emigrated from Scotland:
"My mother was Mary, a daughter of Joseph Smith of the place above mentioned [Orange] .... My mother as before stated was Mary the daughter of Joseph Smith. This my grandfather Smith is known to have been of Scottish descent but whether he was born in Scotland and came young to this country, or whether he was born in this country of parents who emigrated from Scotland, I have not been informed. Grandfather Smith had six daughters and no sons. My mothers place amongst them must have been third of fourth. As far as I have learned they were generally very uniform and steady observers of the externals of religion, in the family and at the house of God, and I believe, most of them esteemed truly pious; they were strict adherents to the Presbyterian Church."
