Jesse L. Black, 1314 8th Ave., Sterling passed away at 9:15 a.m.
Wednesday in Community General Hospital after an extended illness. He
was born July 8 1885 near Prophetstown, Ill., the son of James C. and
Rebecca Sollars Black.

Jesse L. Black was united in marriage to Bertha E. Brants, Jan. 23,
1907. They farmed in the Prophetstown and Harmon areas until retiring
and moving to Sterling in 1958. Mr. Black was a charter member of the
Leon Methodist Church.

Surviving are one son, Leslie L. Black of Sterling; one granddaughter,
Caren Lea Black of Sterling; one brother, Floyd Black of Fenton and one
sister, Mrs. James (Mabel) Atchley of Rock Falls.

The body was moved to the Melvin Funeral Home where friends may call
after 2 p.m. Thursday.

A prayer service will be held at 1:15 p.m. Friday in the Melvin Funeral
Home followed by services at 2 p.m. in the Leon Methodist Church, south
of Prophetstown, Rev. Lloyd O. Coleman, pastor of the First Methodist
church of Sterling, will officiate. Burial will take place in the Leon
Cemetery adjoining the church.

Mr. Black was preceded in death by his wife on Dec. 8, 1961, his
parents, one brother, one sister and a half-sister and a half-brother
