Civil War Union Army Officer. Commissioned Lieutenant Colonel, 74th New York Volunteer Infantry, September 2, 1861, he was commissioned it's Colonel and commander on April 11, 1862. After serving in the field for a year, he was discharged due to disability on September 18, 1862.

On June 6, 1864 he was commissioned as Colonel of the 15th New York State Militia, serving until honorably mustered out on July 7, 1864.
