Samuel Dickerson Burchard
Birth: Sep. 6, 1812
Steuben
Oneida County
New York, USA
Death: Sep. 25, 1891
Saratoga
Saratoga County
New York, USA

Religious Leader. An ordained Presbyterian minister, he served as chancellor of Ingham University, and as president of Rutgers Female College. During the 1884 Presidential Campaign between Republican James Blaine and Democrat Grover Cleveland, while a minister in New York City, New York, Samuel Burchard gained renown for his attack on the Democratic Party that became to be known as the "Rum, Romanism and Rebellion" sermon. The sermon, which stated Democrats supported liquor ("rum"), Catholicism ("romanism") and the Confederacy in 1861 ("rebellion"), angered many New Yorkers, as it was seen as blatant hostility towards Catholics, especially Irish Catholics. The resulting backlash did cause many to switch their votes to Grover Cleveland, and Reverend Burchard's sermon is now thought of as having influenced James Blaine's defeat. (bio by: Russ Dodge)

Everyone is entitled to voice an opinion, but the wise know precisely when to do it, and where to do it. Rest in peace sir.
