MIDDLETOWN - James I. Snyder, 73, former mayor and oldest businessman in Middletown, died at 8 p.m. Saturday at his home.

He was born Dec. 10, 1877 in Londonderry, Ohio, a son of Jesse and Johanna Snyder.

He was married to Ella S. Gibbs Aug. 3, 1903. She died in 1933.

He had operated a feed store in Middletown since 1929 and had served as mayor for 18 years.

Mr. Snyder was superintendent of the Presbyterian Sunday School in Middletown for 30 years, a charter member and an elder in the church and taught a young men's class.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Berniece Vineyard of Middletown and a grandson.

The body was taken to the Wright Funeral Home in Lincoln and was returned to the residence. Services were held in the Middletown Presbyterian Church.

Burial was in Irish Grove Cemetery.
