Mae Christine High, 88, died Sept. 27, 2001, of natural causes in Klamath Falls.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in O'Hair & Riggs Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Joyce Fogle officiating. Cremation will be by Klamath Cremation Service.
Ms. High was born Sept. 14, 1913, in Dorris to Frank and Julie (Rodschou) High. She was the youngest of their six children.
Her parents had settled in the Malin area after immigrating from Denmark.
She spent most of her early life in Dorris and Ashland, graduating from high school in Dorris in 1932.
She then moved to the Yreka area, where she worked in the telephone company office, at the public library, and on a ranch.
She later moved to San Francisco to attend a three-year program at Glad Tiding Bible Institute, which is now known as Bethany Bible College, graduating as an ordained minister in 1937.
Returning to Yreka, Ms. High worked there until the early 1940s when she moved to Eugene to attend Eugene Cadet Program, a federally funded Army nursing program, for four years.
She took her first nursing job at Seaside Hospital in Crescent City, Calif., working there for three years. She next worked at the old Medford Hospital in Medford.
She attended Barnes Hospital in Nebraska with the intent of becoming a nurse anesthetist. When her uncle became quite ill, however, she moved to Malin to care for him until his death.
Ms. High completed her interrupted training at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, graduating as a nurse anesthetist in 1954.
She then moved to Klamath Falls and worked at the old Klamath Valley Hospital for about six years. During that time, she helped her second cousin Theodosia "Teddy" Walker through college and they became ranching business partners.
They owned and operated the 300-acre Walker-High Ranch for 43 years. Also during that time, an illness forced her to quit nursing for about three years.
Once she had recovered, she returned to Medford and worked as an emergency room nurse until a nurse anesthetist position became open in Ashland, where she worked at the Ashland Community Hospital until retiring in 1983.
Ms. High enjoyed playing tennis, running, hiking, bicycling, and fishing, especially in the Smith River Canyon. She also liked to travel to numerous famous landmarks, make butter, and do greenhouse gardening. She grew flowers and strawberries.
She loved animals, mostly her calves and goats, and listening to Christian music.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Malin.
Survivors include her sister, Clarice Cook of White City; cousins, Teddy Walker and Zena Stevenson of Malin, Ola Vaughn and Lilian Derra of Klamath Falls, Charlotte Derra of San Francisco, and Annie Pierce of Palo Cedro, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Lin, Eber and Don High, and her sister, Francis Cooper
