Civil War Union Army Officer. He began his Civil War service when he enlisted in the 12th Pennsylvania (Three-Month) Volunteer Infantry on April 25, 1861, and was mustered in as a Sergeant in Company K. After serving his three-month enlistment, he mustered out on August 5, 1861, but was destined to rejoin the Union war effort a month later. On September 17, 1861, he accepted a commission of Major, and was mustered into the 78th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He remained with the regiment throughout the the war, rising to Lieutenant Colonel (July 24, 1864) and Colonel and commander (March 11, 1865). When he was honorably mustered out of service after occupation duty on December 14, 1865, he was offered a place in the post-War Regular Army. Commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the 35th United States Infantry, he served on the frontier before dying at his post of yellow fever in Indianola, Texas in 1867.
