Second child and oldest son of Thomas Beale and Milcah (Goodwin) Dorsey.

Samuel moved from Maryland to Louisiana and later Mississippi. He was a plantation owner and had large land holdings, and many slaves. He lost most of his holdings during the Civil War.

Samuel married Sarah Ann ELLIS on 19 June 1853 in Adams County on the southwest border of Mississippi - near Natchez.
