My Great Uncle. Born in Tarxien, Malta, Giuseppe Barbara was the eldest of three surviving children born to John Baptist Barbara and Giovanna Orlando. Giuseppe spent his childhood in Tarxien and Zejtun, and following the early unexpected demise of his father, he left school in order to support his mother and two sisters. He was first employed by a well-off lady as an errand boy in Valletta, and later at the Gas Factory in Marsa, where his father was once employed.

Aged 20, Joe left Malta for Australia, first settling at Broken Hill, New South Wales, where he was employed as as a road maintenance worker. When his younger sister Katy, joined him in Australia following the demise of their mother, whom she took care of till her last breath, they moved to Merrylands with their maternal Uncle, the late Marcello Orlando (1912 – 1995), and his family.

Joe entered a Shoe Factory, serving for years as Fork Lifter Driver and Store Keeper, until his retirement. He and his sister moved together to Cabramatta, Fairfield, residing in Longfield Street, and formed part of the Catholic Parish Church of the Sacred Heart. Following the unexpected demise of his sister in July 1999, at the early age of 62, Joe was looked after by his cousin Theresa, and her relatives.

Suffering from severe health problems, Joe was recovered at Nyora Garden's Nursing Home in Fairfield, Sydney, where he passed away at the age of 78, on Wednesday, May 9, 2007. Funeral Mass was celebrated at the named Parish Church of the Sacred Heart by Father Patrick McAuliffe, followed by internment inside Sydney's Catholic Lawn Kemps Creek Cemetery, upon the remains of his younger sister, Katie.
