US Congressman, Signer of US Constitution. This Irish immigrant was a successful businessman, philanthropist and supporter of the American Independence effort. He came to America around 1760 where he settled in Philadelphia and helped establish one of America's largest trading houses. When the Revolutionary War began he enthusiastically supported the effort as a leader of a militia company. The successful merchant also provided supplies and money to the military. He entered politics when he was selected a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1782 and 1783. From 1786 to 1789 he held a seat in the Pennsylvania state legislature and in 1787 represented his state as a delegate to the US Constitutional Convention. He kept a low profile at the convention however his strong nationalist views were evident to all who knew him. He aligned himself with the Federalist Party and was elected to Congress three times serving in that capacity from 1789 to 1795. After losing his reelection bid for a fourth term he returned to his private business interests where he had found success as a founder and director of the Bank of North America as well as the Insurance Company of North America.
