BUFFALO BILL'S DAUGHTER DIES

Appendicitis Suddenly Ends the Life of the Woman After Her Honeymoon Trip

SAD CLOSE OF ROMANCE

Interesting Wedding in Denver on New Year's Day Recalled by Spokane Hospital Case

Special Dispatch to The Call

SPOKANE. Jan. 31.— Mrs. Charles W. Thorp, daughter of William F. Cody, died at a Spokane hospital this mornIng. Her death was due to the shock of an operation for appendicitis and complications. Dr. and Mrs. Thorp had been residents of Spokane only a couple of weeks, coming here after their honeymoon trip following their wedding at Denver on New Year's day. The wedding of Mrs. Arta Cody Boal and Dr. Thorp was the culmination of a romance of several years' standing and was kept secret for several days owing to the opposition of "Buffalo Bill," who did not fancy an army surgeon for a son-in-law. Though the wedding was performed at Denver New Year's day, the Denver papers did not discover the fact until five days later, when the couple had left for the Northwest.

Dr. Thorp first met his wife when she was the wife of H. H. Boal, a wealthy resident of Chicago. Boal's stepmother was a daughter of Dr. Ayres and on her death Inherited a fortune of $4.000,000. About three years ago Boal was thrown from a horse, sustaining injuries which caused frequent fits of melancholia. During one of these fits he committed suicide. During the Spanish-American War Dr. Thorp was stationed in the Philippines as an army surgeon and until recently was doing post duty in the West. He resigned to establish a practice here.

Buffalo Bill's Daughter. Obituary: The death of Mrs. Charles W. Thorpe, who died Sunday afternoon at Spokane, is much regretted by her many friends who knew her as Arta Cody, daughter of Col. W. F. Cody. She was married only one month, the wedding having occurred on New Year's day. Her death was due to the operation of laparotomy which was performed a week previous, being followed by complications which proved fatal. The remains were interred at Rochester, N.Y.

The Tacoma Times Newspaper, February 1, 1904, carried an account of the death of Arta Cody Thorp. She died after an operation for appendicitis in Spokane, Washington. She was the wife of Dr. Charles Thorp and the couple had only been in the city for a few weeks. He was going to set up a medical practice in Spokane, having resigned from the Army. His service had included serving as an Army surgeon in the Philippines and a later posting in the western U.S.

Arta Cody married Charles Thorp on New Year's Day in Denver Colorado. They had been courting for several years and the marriage was against her father's wishes.

Some details were found in another newspaper, the Moyie Leader, Moyie, British Columbia, Canada, February 4, 1904. That account said the Sacred Heart Hospital, Spokane, was where she died, her age was 36 and that her remains were shipped to Rochester.
