Born in Passaic, New Jersey, he was a standout player during his collegiate years at Rutgers University achieving All-Region status in 1988 and was inducted into their Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. He was signed by the Montreal Expos during the 1988 Amateur Draft. Winston played in the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets organizations before making his big league debut with the Philadelphia Phillies on September 10, 1997 at age 31. He played with the Phillies for two seasons (1997 to 1998) and compiled a record of 4 wins and two losses, with a lifetime 5.84 ERA in 34 games. In addition, Winston was a star player with the Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. He died from leukemia at the age of 42.
