Lawyer. He studied law at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1785 he published a collection of twenty-five poems entitled Poems on Several Occasions, Written in Pennsylvania. The book was later republished in England. He owned the land in Montgomery County that would eventually become Norristown. He laid out the town into streets and lots. He was the son of William Smith, D.D., and Rebecca Moore of Moore Hall in Chester County. He died at the age of 62. The tombstone arithmetic sets his birth year around 1759.
