When James arrived in Vietnam 6 March 1970, he was assigned to AHC, 13th Aviation Battalion, 164th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade, USARV in Phong Dinh Province.
James had volunteered to be a helicopter door gunner and was aboard a UH-1H #67-17594 helicopter that crashed in the vicinity of Can Tho, due to mechanical failure system of the main rotor. James died as a result of bodily injuries from the crash impact on the ground.
Survived by his mother, Harriet R Syiewe of 2215 North Weil St, Milwaukee, WS and his father; Alvin C Lenz of Rural Route #3, Box 231, Clinton, Indiana.
