It is now 4 weeks since the doctor himself discovered a little excrescence on his neck close where it joined his head…grew more painful every day…at the end of a week the lump began to positively discommode the doctor and he wandered in his head and almost always he experienced great difficulty walking or even regulating the movements of his limbs.
Two weeks ago he was taken to the residence of Mr. and Mrs. O.F. Cowhick (half brother). Dr. Barkwell was called and at once discovered that the doctor was suffering from a large carbuncle…with remedies the patient began to improve…until 2 o'clock yesterday morning…the immediate cause of death was a heart trouble with which the doctor has suffered for many years.
Dr. Cowhick was born in Pennsylvania in October 1824. He was one of 3 children, two boys and one girl. The brother died of a disease contracted in the Mexican war; the sister is now living in Indiana.
He has 3-1/2 brothers living here, O.F., D.R., and Scott Cowhick, and 3-1/2 sisters in Ohio and a ½ brother in Missouri.
He learned the printer's trade in New London, OH. Later, he went to Princeton theological seminary and was ordained a preacher in 1858. For 17 years he was pastor in Stewartstown, PA.
He came to Cheyenne in 1875 as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church for 8 years. His heart disease led to his resignation. Afterwards, he regularly filled the pulpit and was often called upon to perform marriage ceremonies…several years ago the title of doctor of divinity was conferred upon him by William and Mary's college.
He had a genius for business…accumulated a great deal of money…property valued here from $35-50K…owned a large tract of land in Baltimor and other property in PA. For several years he has been vice president of the Cheyenne National Bank.
