Obituary
The Cheyenne Sun chronicles the death, at South Pass City, September 29th, of John Morris. Deceased was the father of Robert C. and Edward J. Morris, and step-father of Mr. Slack [Edward Archibald, aka "E. A." Slack], of the Sun. He was sixty three years old at the time of his death, and had been in South Pass nine or ten years. [John, a Mason, was later paid tribute in the newspaper by his fraternal brothers.]

In 1868, John, born in Poland, arrived in South Pass City, WY Territory with [Edward] Archibald Slack, the son of his wife's first marriage to Artemis Slack. At first he was a saloon keeper; later, a miner. Subsequently, he had a stint as coroner, being elected in 1872.
John and Esther Slack nee McQuigg were married in Peru, Illinois in 1846. They were the parents of three sons: John Jr., and twins, Edward J. and Robert C.
[John's gravestone in Cheyenne may be a memorial. City records record burial in 1876.]
