British Revolutionary War Army Officer. Holder of the titles of 2nd Earl of Moira, Baron Rawdon of Rawdon, and 1st Marquess of Hastings, he was the second of six children born to the 1st Earl of Moira and the Baroness Hastings. After his schooling at the Harrow and University College, Oxford, he joined the British Army in 1771 at the age of 17 and enjoyed a distinguished military career. During the Revolutionary War he was stationed in the United States and fought in the battles of Bunker Hill, Brooklyn, White Plains, Monmouth, and Camden and at the attacks on Fort Washington, and Clinton, and the siege of Charleston. One of his most famous achievements was raising a corps of Loyalists in Philadelphia known as the Volunteers of Ireland. He led this small group to an overwhelming victory against a much larger force of Americans at the Battle of Hobkirk's Hill. After his return to Great Britain he was made Baron Rawdon of Rawdon in 1783. He fought in Flanders in 1794, was appointed Commander-in-Chief of Scotland in 1803, and Master General of the Ordnance in 1806. Between times he found time to marry the 6th Countess of Loudon on July 12, 1804 and they had six children. He entered politics in his middle years and was Governor-General of Bengal, or in effect, the ruler of British India and commander-in-chief from 1813 to 1823. He was a key figure in the Ghurka War from 1814 to 1816. After leaving India he was appointed as governor of Malta in 1823 and he died in that office. His death occurred on the "HMS Revenge" anchored in Naples and his body returned to Malta. The garden where his sarcophagus is located is named Hastings Garden in his honor and is the largest park in Valletta, the capital city.
